What it is
What goes wrong with outlets
Electrical outlet repair is the testing and repair of a receptacle and the wiring behind it. A failed outlet is often a sign of a loose connection, which is a fire risk.
- Dead outlet: a tripped GFCI elsewhere, a tripped breaker or a loose wire.
- Warm or discolored outlet: a loose or overloaded connection. Stop using it.
- Loose grip: worn contacts that no longer hold a plug firmly.
- Sparks or crackling: arcing at the terminals. Turn the breaker off.
Check this first
Many "dead" outlets in kitchens, baths, garages and patios are fed through one GFCI outlet. Find the GFCI on that circuit and press reset before calling.
Coastal homes
Outdoor outlets and the marine layer
Damp marine air and salt near the coast corrode outdoor outlets and their boxes. Green or white crust on the terminals means poor contact and heat.
The fix is a weather-resistant outlet, a sealed in-use cover and, when the box itself is rusted, a new box. Outdoor outlets also need GFCI protection.
For outlets that trip their GFCI again and again, see GFCI outlet replacement. To add new outlets rather than repair old ones, see outlet and switch installation.
Stop and call now if
- The outlet is hot to the touch
- You see scorch marks
- You smell burning plastic
- The breaker trips each time you plug in
Smoke or flames: leave and call 911.
Older wiring
Backstabbed and aluminum connections
Many outlets are wired through push-in "backstab" holes instead of the side screws. Those connections loosen over time and cause outlets to fail along a circuit.
Some homes built in the 1960s and 1970s have aluminum branch wiring. It needs connectors rated for aluminum, or outlets fail and overheat. The electrician checks the wire type before repairing.
What a repair visit includes
- Testing the outlet and circuit
- Tightening or redoing connections
- Replacing worn devices

Electrical Outlet Repair in Santa Barbara: FAQs
Talk to a licensed electrician
Describe the problem and your ZIP. We will connect you with a local pro in Santa Barbara.
Call (815) 456-4349Why did half my outlets stop working?
Usually a tripped GFCI or breaker, or a loose connection at one outlet that feeds the rest. An electrician traces the circuit to the failed point.
Is a warm outlet dangerous?
Yes. Heat means a loose or overloaded connection. Unplug everything and have it checked.
Does outlet repair need a permit?
Replacing a device in the same box is usually minor repair. Running new wire or adding outlets needs a permit.
