What it covers

The electrical side of a solar system

Solar electrical work is the wiring that connects solar panels, inverters and batteries to your home's panel and the SCE grid. It decides whether the system is safe, passes inspection and gets permission to operate.

  • Main panel capacity checks and upgrades for solar backfeed
  • Inverter, disconnect and conduit runs
  • Battery and backup subpanel wiring
  • Rapid shutdown and labeling for firefighters
  • Disconnect and reconnect for roof work

Net billing since 2023

SCE moved new solar customers to the Net Billing Tariff on April 15, 2023. Exported power now earns much less than under the old net metering. That makes batteries, which store daytime power for evening use, a bigger part of most new systems.

Permits

Solar permits in the City of Santa Barbara

The City's Building & Safety Division publishes requirements for photovoltaic systems that qualify for expedited review under California's AB 2188. Systems in Montecito and other unincorporated areas go to the County.

After the inspection passes, SCE gives permission to operate. Do not switch the system on before that.

Santa Barbara Clean Energy customers still have SCE deliver their power, so the interconnection process runs through SCE.

Order of work

  1. Load and panel review
  2. Design and permit
  3. Install and inspection
  4. SCE permission to operate

Shutoffs

Backup power during SCE shutoffs

A standard grid-tied solar system turns off during an outage to protect line crews. It does not power your home in a Public Safety Power Shutoff on its own.

A battery with a backup subpanel keeps chosen circuits running when the grid is down. The electrician moves those circuits, such as the refrigerator and lights, to the backup panel.

A tripping solar breaker or a breaker that runs hot is a separate problem. See circuit breaker replacement.

Good backup circuits

  • Refrigerator
  • Some lights and outlets
  • Internet and phone charging
  • Garage door opener

Questions we hear

Solar Electrical Work in Santa Barbara: FAQs

Talk to a licensed electrician

Describe the problem and your ZIP. We will connect you with a local pro in Santa Barbara.

Call (815) 456-4349
Does my solar work during a power shutoff?

Not without a battery and backup wiring. Grid-tied systems shut off during outages by design.

Do I need a panel upgrade for solar?

Sometimes. If the panel's busbar rating cannot take the solar backfeed, the electrician upgrades the panel or uses another approved connection method.

Who handles solar in Montecito?

Montecito is unincorporated, so permits go to the County of Santa Barbara, and SCE handles interconnection.
